     Description of the measure

     Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München with its 18 faculties offers a wide range of classes in gender studies within individual disciplines. The special course catalogue "Frauenstudien / Gender Studies" presents classes (some of which are only open to registered students) relating to women's studies and gender issues and classes that take gender and diversity considerations into account in their methodology, with comments. The brochure also contains information about special events relating to this topic area and announcements about advanced training through LMU EXTRA (for female early career researchers), LMU PLUS (for students) and GENDER & DIVERSITY IN TEACHING (for teaching staff). The editorial by the university women's officer explains new developments in the area of gender studies in teaching, research and course programmes and current developments in equality at LMU.

     Each semester there is a scholarly article on current research questions in gender studies. There is also a guest article by a student addressing current issues in relation to studying at LMU.

     Because FernUniversität in Hagen aims to have gender balance on its self-governance bodies, but there are fewer women than men at professorial level, female professors tend to have a larger workload in this respect than their male peers. Female professors whose workload is particularly heavy receive additional funds for research assistants (10 hours per week) to reduce their workload elsewhere during the period in which they participate in at least three self-governance bodies: the senate, the faculty council, appointments committees (as members or appointments officers), the examinations committee, the degree programme committee or committees for study planning and evaluation. One particular strength of this measure is that the amount of funding is based on the costs of ten research assistant hours per week, but the funded professors have the flexibility to use this funding in a way that best helps to reduce their workload.

     Description of the measure

     There is a room at Trier University reserved exclusively for the use of female doctoral researchers, with four internet-enabled computers, a printer, an internal phone and four desks. The aim of this measure is to enable female doctoral researchers without a permanent office at the university to work in close proximity and therefore promote vital contact with their colleagues. It counters the isolation of sitting at a desk at home and enables peer support during critical phases of the qualification process.

     Description of the measure

     The programme “Coaching, Supervision and Peer Support in a University Context” at Leibniz Universität Hannover is aimed at female researchers - professors, junior professors and postdoctoral researchers - with management responsibility. Over the one-year period of the programme, up to 10 female researchers can take part in monthly sessions. The programme components, with a thematic focus on management in research, are:

     • Supervision and peer support according to plan (24 hours in total)
     • Introduction to the method of peer support in a university context, individual development planning (mandatory attendance)
     • Regular supervision combined with peer support
     • Completion and evaluation of year group and systematic evaluation of topics handled and case response with individual feedback for participants (mandatory attendance)
     • Topic impetus – 3 short workshops, e.g. self-management, staff management, self-positioning in the university, cooperation (mandatory attendance)
     • Coaching – 6 hours per participant depending on needs

     The order of the various elements is decided by the participants individually and combined accordingly. With supervision, participants can practise adopting different perspectives in a group under the guidance of a supervisor and thus reflect on their own professional approach; with peer support this happens within the group itself. Individual systematic management coaching provides an opportunity for preparation and follow-up on the topics covered in the supervision and peer support. The three formats are supplemented by short workshops which provide participants with the necessary basic knowledge, communication techniques and leadership strategies.

     The programme is led by Alexandra Busch, an experienced expert in training and coaching researchers.

     Description of the measure

     In a collaboration between three cartoonists, several DFG research groups and the Equal Opportunities Office, a series of cartoons was created to raise awareness in a humorous way about informal, gender-related mechanisms in everyday working life in science and engineering research groups. The cartoons are designed to expose unconscious patterns of thinking, behaviour and evaluation often based on male-dominated norms. In this way, they provide a new opportunity for dialogue on gender relations.

     Ideas for the cartoon scenarios were drawn from experiences and observations in the day-to-day working lives of researchers identified in discussions with the cartoonists.

     Three cartoons in English and six in German address different situations in which gender bias is evident in the research environment: e.g. evaluation situations, role assignments, self-presentation, leadership and early career support.

     The cartoons were produced as a series of postcards and are available in both printed and digital form from the Equal Opportunities Office. They can also be loaned out as posters for exhibitions.

     Description of the measure

     The conTakt advisory service at the University of Oldenburg provides advice on all issues relating to sexual harassment and violence. Advice is available over the phone or by e-mail and psychological and legal counselling can also be offered. The service also publishes a guideline, raises awareness through talks and exhibitions, and integrates the topic in the university's continuing education programme. The aim is to prevent sexual violence and harassment and empower affected individuals and managers to respond quickly.

     The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering runs a regular get-together or ‘Stammtisch’ called connectING, which gives female students and staff members the opportunity to network away from the desk or lecture hall. The Stammtisch is held approximately three times per semester with a varying programme of institute visits, presentations and discussions. At the annual autumn seminar it is complemented by excursions and individual seminars.

     Some events are open to both women and men, for example the event on balancing family and career. Topics are chosen in response to suggestions from participants.

     The measure "female.2.enterprises" at Technische Universität Dortmund (TU Dortmund) includes two types of events designed to bring together female academics and local companies: female.2.enterprises on stage and female.2.enterprises on tour. The project supports female master's students and female researchers in all disciplines at TU Dortmund to transition from academia to the regional private sector and to find partners for master's or doctoral dissertations. A range of career-related workshops and coaching sessions is offered (female.2.enterprises on stage) and participants are given the opportunity to visit companies in Dortmund and the surrounding area (female.2.enterprises on tour).

     Objectives of the measure

     The aim of "firstgen" is to provide a point of contact and orientation for the university start of students whose parents have not acquired an academic degree.

     Description of the measure

     The empowerment programme "firstgen" at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU Berlin) is designed to provide orientation for students starting university. It is specifically designed for students whose parents did not obtain a university degree (first-generation students) and who are starting a course of study at HU Berlin. All postgraduate and doctoral students who were also the first member of their family to go to university can apply to be mentors. The firstgen programme consists of three parts:

     1. Training:

     Students learn about important aspects of university life, academic work and successful communication. They also have the opportunity to learn about successful career planning and strategies for dealing with any problems that arise.

     2. Mentoring:

     The firstgen team puts mentees in touch with mentors.

     3. Networking:

     Students can meet up with approximately 40 other participants to discuss their experiences, establish contacts and get to know the campus and university life. Through an online platform and an exchange café they can get in touch with other people who were also first-generation students and have now embarked on their careers. Shared activities and information are also offered.

     Description of the measure

     The go diverse project provides training, guidance and information for all academic and administrative staff involved in recruitment at the University of Bremen. As part of the project, workshops are organized to deliver training on the gender and diversity skills required for recruitment processes and appraisals. The aim is to combat inequality in recruitment and improve diversity within the research system. This applies to the allocation of doctoral and postdoctoral posts and appointment processes. go diverse also addresses other forms of discrimination based on race, disabilities, social class and age as part of the work on gender equality.
