Vita

Education:

Daniil earned his PhD in Sociology from HSE University in 2023, focusing on the utilization of paradata to assess and enhance data quality in web surveys under the guidance of Aigul Klimova (Mavletova). His doctoral thesis was titled 'Paradata opportunities to measure and improve data quality in web surveys.'

Prior to his doctoral studies, Daniil completed his Master's with honors in Sociology, specializing in "Complex Social Analysis" at HSE University in 2019. His Master's thesis, supervised by Aigul Klimova (Mavletova), explored the utilization of GPS paradata in Computer-Assisted Personal Interviews for enhanced fieldwork interviewer monitoring.

Daniil commenced his academic journey with a Bachelor's degree in Sociology from HSE University in 2017, focusing on the 'Methods of Applied Social Research' specialization. His Bachelor's thesis, supervised by Aigul Klimova (Mavletova), delved into the assessment of data quality in PC and mobile web surveys, specifically examining grids and item-by-item formats.

Academic experience:

From 2020 to 2022, Daniil served as a research assistant at the International Laboratory for Social Integration Research at HSE University. In this role, he contributed to the development of methodology for the international cross-cultural survey "Inclusive Education and Society: Strategies, Practices, and Resources." His responsibilities included web survey methodology development, survey management, fieldwork monitoring, data pre-processing as well as quantitative data analysis.

Prior to this, from 2016 to 2019, Daniil held the position of Junior Research Fellow at the Institute of Social Analysis and Forecasting at RANEPA Moscow. During this period, he conducted extensive analyses on poverty in Russia, developing a multidimensional poverty index. His work involved studying the demographic situation in Russia with a focus on poverty and various socio-demographic groups. He was also responsible for generating annual scientific reports, reviews, analytical notes, and publications based on quantitative data from the Federal State Statistics Service (FSSS) of Russia.

In earlier roles, such as his position as a student research assistant at the Institute for Social Policy (HSE University) from 2016 to 2018, Daniil engaged in quantitative data analysis for the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS-HSE). His responsibilities included pre-processing, analyzing, and visualizing longitudinal data.

Projects:

  • "Oculography in the multimodal measurement of the respondent's cognitive load" with Dr. Inna Deviatko, Dr. Aigul Klimova and Tatiana Semenova (all HSE University)
  • "Using paradata to measure and improve the quality of data in online research" with Dr. Aigul Klimova (HSE University)
  • "Development of interactive methodical infrastructure for data quality enhancement of longitudinal sociological surveys" with Dr. Inna Deviatko, Dr. Aigul Klimova, Mikhail Bogdanov (all HSE University) and Dr. Alexandru Cernat (University of Manchester)

International experience:

In March 2022, Daniil was a Visiting Researcher at GESIS Leibniz Institute for the Social Sciences, working alongside Dr. Tobias Gummer from Team Family Surveys on a project "Paradata and Data Quality in Surveys."

In February 2022, Daniil collaborated with Dr. Bella Struminskaya and Dr. Peter Lugtig from the Department of Methodology and Statistics at Utrecht University. Their joint project focused on leveraging paradata to evaluate data quality in web surveys.

In September 2019 he participated in the Survey Research week at Ljubljana University. During this time, Daniil engaged with experts like Dr. Vasja Vehovar from the Centre for Social Informatics at the University of Ljubljana and Dr. Mick Couper from the Survey Research Center at the University of Michigan.

Service

Daniil contributes to Team Cross-cultural Survey Methods by overseeing European Social Survey (ESS) fieldwork monitoring and ensuring quality control for the self-completion mode. Additionally, he conducts independent research focusing on analyzing respondents' behaviors in web survey completion, particularly within the context of satisficing and optimizing strategies.

Research

Daniil's primary research interests revolve around various aspects of survey methodology. Specifically, he focuses on paradata analysis, examining web survey respondents' behavior, exploring satisficing and optimizing strategies, assessing diverse data collection methods, survey design, conducting web survey experiments, implementing mix-mode surveys, and studying longitudinal surveys.
