Alexia Katsanidou is the scientific director of the GESIS Department Survey Data Curation and Professor of Empirical Social Research at the University of Cologne.

Alexia Katsanidou is a comparative political scientist. She currently works as a PI on projects regarding the impact of the crisis in political representation and political behaviour (Project: Solikris) together with WZB and University of Heidelberg, and the issue of solidarity in the COVID-19 pandemic (Priject: SAFE-19) together with other GESIS partners and University of Hildesheim.

She has an M.A. in Comparative Democratization (2003) and a Ph.D. in Politics (2008) from the Government Department at Essex University, UK. She studied International Politics and Economics at the University of Macedonia, Greece. In the period 2010-2015 she lead the Team International Data Infrastructures at the GESIS Data Archive for the Social Sciences.
Alexia Katsanidou has served in the Board of Directors of CESSDA (Consortium of European Social Science Data Archives) and in Secretary of the Board of IFDO (International Federation of Data Organisations). She is also a member of the scientific advisory board of the OPTED project, the Czech and the Austrian Social Science Data Archive. She also advises research projects on data collection, data management and content related scientific issues on political engagement and representation.

Alexia Katsanidou's research interests are in the field of comparative electoral studies and include political behavior, quality of representation and radicalization of European societies. She has been awarded the Max Weber post-doc Fellowship in European University Institute for the year 2009-2010 as well as research grants from the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), the German Reesarch Foundation (DFG), the Leibniz Alliance, British Academy and the Max Planck Society the DFG and the European Union (FP7 and H2020). Her work has been published among others, in European Journal of Political Research, European Union Politics, West European Politics, European Political Science and Political Psychology .
