Die Geschichte der Zeitschrift Historical Social Research (HSR) ist eng verknüpft mit QUANTUM.
QUANTUM e.V. - die „Arbeitsgemeinschaft für Quantifizierung und Methoden in der historisch-sozialwissenschaftlichen Forschung e.V.“ - wurde 1975 gegründet und rief 1976 ein eigenes Publikationsorgan ins Leben: die HSR. Diese erschien ab 1976 zunächst unter dem Titel "Quantum Information" als Newsletter der Arbeitsgemeinschaft QUANTUM und seit 1979 unter dem heutigen Titel. Als offizielle Zeitschrift der Arbeitsgemeinschaft QUANTUM und der Internationalen Kommission INTERQUANT fungierte die HSR zunächst als internationales Leitorgan der wissenschaftlichen Anwendung computergestützter statistischer Methoden zur Analyse historischer Daten. Die HSR versteht sich inzwischen in Erweiterung als eine internationale Zeitschrift für die Anwendung formaler Methoden zur Beschreibung und Analyse historischer Ereignisse, Strukturen und Prozesse.
